Raavan stars Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Vikram in the lead roles while Govinda, Ravi Kishan, Nikhil Dwivedi, and Priyamani play key supporting roles.It is written and directed by Mani Ratnam.The music is composed by Academy Awards winner A. R. Rahman.It is simultaneously being made in Tamil as Raavana with a slightly different cast.The film will also be dubbed into Telugu and other regional languages.
The highly anticipated soundtrack of the movie will be done by Academy Award Wnner and Mani Ratnam's usual assosciate A. R. Rahman with lyrics by Gulzar. According to unofficial sources, Rahman has reused two songs he composed for the shelved Aamir Khan film Lajjo and a Qawwali composed for Jodhaa Akbar which was not used in the film. There are also reports that Mani Ratnam recently shot a big budget song Kata Kata Mara Mara with 500 dancers in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.Asha Bhonsle have recently recorded a song for Raavana. A song titled Pairon Pe Jannat Hai sung by Lucky Ali have leaked through net which is claimed as a song from Raavan.However Rahman claimed that no songs have leaked from Raavana.
Mani Ratnam has reportedly shot a film that is a modern day version and a loose adaptation of the great Indian epic Ramayana in which the wife of Lord Rama, Sita was abducted by the demon (Rakshasa) king of Lanka, Ravana. It is said that Raavan will have a new twist on the Ramayana.
According to the official website, Raavan is not a story but a world. Dev (Vikram), a policeman, falls in love with Ragini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), a classical dancer. They are both unconventional. They get married and he takes her to his new post in Lal Maati, a small town in northern India. Lal Maati is a town where the word of law is not the police but Beera (Abhishek Bachchan), a tribal who has, over the years shifted the power from the ruling to the have-nots of the area. Dev knows that the key to bringing order to any place is to vanquish the big fish, in this case - Beera. In one stroke Dev manages to rip open Beera's world, and set in motion a chain of events which will claim lives, change fortunes. Beera, injured but enraged hits back starting a battle that draws Dev, Beera and Ragini into the jungle. The jungle which is dense, confusing and scary. And in this journey they must confront their own truth. A journey which will test their beliefs, convictions and emotions. Emotions which are as scary and confusing as the forest. The forest becomes the setting for the battle. The battle between the good and the evil, between Dev and Beera, between Ram and Raavan. When the lines dividing the good and the evil starts to blur, whose side will you take? When hate turns to love and good starts looking as evil which side will you battle for. Love is a battle that nobody wins but everyone must fight for. Even this Raavan.
